Posted on Tuesday, February 19, 2019

KINGSVILLE (February 19, 2019) — Texas A&M University-Kingsville has advanced to the second-highest tier of research universities according to the most recent update from The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The university is recognized as a Carnegie Classified Doctoral University with High Research Activity.

Of the 4,339 universities classified by the Carnegie Foundation, only six percent receive this distinction or higher.

Texas A&M University-Kingsville is one of 89 public institutions in the country and one of six public universities in Texas to be classified as a Doctoral University with High Research Activity.

A measure of research strength and productivity, the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education is the leading framework for recognizing and describing institutional diversity in U.S. higher education for nearly 50 years.

“Great research leads to meaningful real-world experiences for faculty to talk about in the classroom,” said Dr. Mark A. Hussey, Texas A&M University-Kingsville president. “Faculty who are leading these research efforts are bringing students into the lab and helping prepare them for the next phase of their lives. This is a stamp of approval that we are doing impactful research and that is a very good thing for our students and the region.”

“The Carnegie Classification is an indicator of research excellence,” said Dr. Allen Rasmussen, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs. “This recognition identifies us as a university who will contribute to the future of the region. Students at a Carnegie Doctoral High Research institution will experience cutting-edge research opportunities. The future of South Texas will be tied to that research and will shape the direction we are going.”

Doctoral institutions classified as high or very high research institutions have awarded at least 20 research/scholarship doctoral degrees and had at least $5 million in total research expenditures.
