Texas A&M Univeristy-Kingsville alumni Eric Martinez was named the 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year at Marvin Baker Middle School.

Martinez currently works for the Corpus Christi Independent School District where he teaches seventh grade Texas history at Marvin Baker Middle School. He coaches football at Marvin Baker Middle School and Ray High School. In the spring, he also coaches baseball at Ray High School.

“Everyday I look forward to seeing my students with the hope of impacting at least one student a day. When I was named Teacher of the Year by fellow peers and staff I was shocked because this is my second year teaching and coaching,” Martinez said.

“I don’t have the same experience as other teachers, but my connection and guidance to our students is why I feel my peers voted me as their Baker Middle School Teacher of the Year.”

After graduating from Alice High School in 2011, Martinez studied at A&M-Kingsville until he graduated with a degree in kinesiology in 2015.

In the future he hopes to become a special education teacher at a high school and eventually become a principal. He also wants to continue coaching and hopes to one day be the head coach of a high school baseball team.
