Flour Bluff Junior High students tie to win first Javelina Cup math contest, scholarships

Over 130 seventh, eighth and ninth graders from 19 schools competed in the first Javelina Cup Mathematics Competition sponsored by the mathematics department at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. It was dominated by one school, with two team members tying for first place and each winning a $1,250 scholarship to Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Jonas Gallegos and Jackson Preschler, both from Flour Bluff Junior High School, tied for first in the math contest, so they each received matching scholarships. Tyler Mixon, a student at George West Junior High School, placed third and received a $500 scholarship.
Gallegos and Preschler led their school to win the team award. Other team members from Flour Bluff Junior High were Blake Buell and Angelica Villarreal. George West Junior High came in second as a team with Isabella Chapa, Morgan Miller and Taylor Thompson joining Mixon.
In third place was the team from George West High School, including Sarah Crawford, Emily Ellison, Garrett Feist and Raymond Jones.
The top 23 winners received $25 iTunes cards. Winners included Preschler, Gallegos, Mixon, Chapa, Buell, Ellison, Miller, Crawford, Thalia M. Polanco, Benjamin Chi, Cindy Hernandez, Jasmine Mendez, Brandon Campos, Dylan Orr, Jose L. Garcia, Joshua Haley, Diane Montez, Chrishiam Reyes, Samson Sewell, Peng Tang, Valentin Mendietta, Andrew Remelius and Vito Recio.
Other schools participating were Taft High School, Santa Gertrudis Middle School, Santa Gertrudis Academy High School, Dr. Juliet V. Garcia Middle School, London School, Leon Taylor Junior High School, Banquete High School, Freer High School, Driscoll Middle School, Lyford High School, Sinton High School, Runge High School, Harlingen High School, Bishop High School, Luehrs Junior High School and San Diego High School.
