The 2011-2012 theatre season at Texas A&M University-Kingsville starts with a musical and continues with award-winning dramas, a beloved children’s tale, and stories of tragedy and understanding.
These are brief descriptions of the six theatre productions coming up at Texas A&M-Kingsville, as part of the 2011-2012 season from the department of communications and theatre arts. Some productions may not be suitable for all ages.
Once Upon a Mattress
Music by Mary Rogers, Lyrics by Marshall Barer, Book by Jay Thompson, Marshall Barer and Dean Fuller
July 15-17 at 7:30 p.m.
Little Theatre, $5 Admission
This rollicking spin on the familiar classic The Princess and the Pea involves royal courtship and comeuppance, and provides for some side-splitting shenanigans. Chances are you'll never look at fairy tales quite the same way again.
Bethlehem

Little Theatre, $5 Admission
Bethlehem is a dark work about self-knowledge and the nature of evil. Lee, accompanied by his photographer girlfriend Dru, arrives in El Paso to interview Mateo, a convicted murderer recently released. During the intense interview process, Lee so empathizes with his subject’s life in the past that he merges his own past with it in order to reenact it. Bethlehem was the winner of the 2003 National Latino Playwriting Award, and an entry into the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.
Blood Wedding (Bodas de Sangre)

Little Theatre, $5 Admission
The Moon and Death conspire to bring tragedy to lovers that have left their wife and fiancé to be together. This lyrical, stylized story comes from the pen of the gifted Spanish poet and playwright, Federico Garcia Lorca.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
February 2012
Jones Auditorium, $1 Admission
Performances will be held for local and regional elementary schools, along with one public performance; dates and times TBA
The beloved tale of a witch, the fairest one of all, a charming prince and seven very different dwarfs will be this season’s choice for the annual children’s play.
Boys Next Door

March 22-23 at 7:30 p.m., March 25 at 2:30 p.m.
Little Theatre, $5 Admission
A communal residence in New England is home to four mentally challenged young men – Norman, Lucien, Arnold and Barry – and earnest social worker Jack, who supervises them. Mingled with scenes from the daily lives of these four, where “little things” sometimes become momentous – and very funny – are moments of great poignancy.
The Sins of Sor Juana

Sor Juana Inéz de la Cruz was one of the first published poets of the Americas. Born into poverty, she became renowned for her intelligence and ambition, and was invited to join the viceregal court of New Spain. There, she developed an extremely close relationship with the vicereine. However, she suddenly and inexplicably left the viceregal court at age 17 to join a convent. In the convent, her focus was not God, but writing; her work and poetry expressed a feminism centuries ahead of her time. The Sins of Sor Juana won the Helen Hayes Award-The Charles MacArthur Prize for Outstanding New Play, Kennedy Center, and was the winner of the 1998 Hispanic Playwrights Project, South Coast Repertory Theatre.
