It was the end of the college era, but the beginning of a new career and a bright future as 549 students received degrees from Texas A&M University-Kingsville during two spring commencement ceremonies held Friday, May 13, in the Steinke Physical Education Center.

The keynote speaker is State Rep. J.M. Lozano, who represents the people of District 43, which includes Kleberg, Jim Hogg, Kenedy and Willacy Counties, and part of Cameron County.

There were 369 bachelor’s degrees and 170 master’s degrees given. Eleven graduates received doctoral degrees. One student received two degrees.

The majority of the members of the spring class of 2011 were from Texas with 426 from the Lone Star State. Eight were from other states and 115 were from other countries when they entered the university. The most frequent county of origin was Nueces with 76 graduates, followed by Kleberg with 49, Hidalgo with 39, Jim Wells with 33 and Cameron with 32. The class was 57 percent male and 43 percent female. Forty-eight percent of the graduating students were minorities.

Of the bachelor’s graduates, more than 49 percent entered the university as first-time freshmen while the remaining graduates were transfer students. The average age of those receiving bachelor’s degrees was 25. The average age of a master’s graduate was 27 and the average of the doctoral students was 41. The oldest graduate was 71 and the youngest was 20.

Fifteen of the graduates were university employees earning six bachelor’s degrees, eight master’s degrees and one doctoral degree.

The Frank H. Dotterweich College of Engineering led the way with the most graduates with 215. They were followed by the College of Arts and Sciences with 140 and the College of Education and Human Performance with 83. Rounding out the list, the Dick and Mary Lewis Kleberg College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Human Sciences had 72 graduates, the College of Business Administration had 35 graduates each and University College had two.
