NFL Defensive Coordinator Juan Castillo to Share Story of Journey from South Texas to the NFL at A&M-Kingsville

Juan Castillo—current defensive coordinator with the National Football League’s Philadelphia Eagles and a former linebacker and coach with Javelina football—will be the featured guest speaker as part of the Texas A&M University-Kingsville University Lectureship Series at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, in Jones Auditorium.
Juan Castillo: The Journey from South Texas to the NFL will focus on the Port Isabel-native’s career, which began at A&M-Kingsville and includes various coaching positions with the Philadelphia Eagles, including his most recent position as defensive coordinator.
This event is free and open to the public.
Castillo played linebacker for the Javelinas from 1978-1980 and was part of the 1979 NAIA Championship Team. He went on to become a graduate assistant working with the Javelina defense from 1982-1984 and later was the linebacker/defensive coordinator for the H.M. King Brahmas from 1986-1989. Castillo returned to A&M-Kingsville as the offensive line coach from 1990-1994. The next year, Castillo made the leap from Javelina football to the NFL, becoming an offensive assistant with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1995. Seventeen seasons later, Castillo is returning to his defensive roots, having been tapped as defensive coordinator earlier this year.
From humble beginnings in South Texas to one of the NFL, his is a story of perseverance and determination. Castillo is one of few Hispanic coaches in the league and has worked to promote the game to Spanish-speaking audiences. In 2002, Castillo and his wife, Zaida, were special invitees of President George W. Bush for a special Cinco de Mayo Celebration at the White House.
Castillo received his bachelor’s from Texas A&I University in 1986 and received his master’s in 1990.
