Students from the Texas A&M University-Kingsville’s Forensics Team earned high honors during The Alamo City Swing speech tournament—a competition that drew student teams from nine other regional schools, including two teams ranked among the top 20 forensic teams in the nation.
The five-member A&M-Kingsville team finished in 2nd place in school sweepstakes for each day of the two-day competition and finished 2nd place in overall sweepstakes, which reflected the results of both days of competition combined. The team came in 2nd only to the University of Texas team, which is currently considered one of the top five teams in the nation.
Casey Garcia, the program’s new director of forensics, said the team’s experience attending state-wide tournaments last year and co-hosting a couple of tournaments with the University of Texas, and competing in one of the most prestigious national tournaments has allowed the students to grow and develop their skills.
“Our students took all the knowledge they had learned in performance, writing and speaking and applied it to all their events and had a wonderful showing at the Alamo City Swing in San Antonio,” Garcia said. “I feel that this year has been filled with great learning experiences for both my students and myself.”
A&M-Kingsville junior English major Marcus Perez earned distinction as the tournament’s individual sweepstakes winner for both days of competition combined.
“Going to the Alamo City Swing, my main goal was to just give each performance my full potential and I am very proud that I was able to do that,” Perez said. “I think the most important thing about college forensics is not to go into a tournament hoping to beat everyone else, but to do the best that is possible for you,” Perez said.
All five members of the team have advanced to national competitions in April.
“Qualifying an entire team for national competition is a huge accomplishment and one that not many schools in the nation can claim,” Garcia said. “To say that I am proud of my students would be an understatement. To say that they are dedicated to representing this university at the national level in a competent and professional manner goes without saying.”
