43rd Annual Jazz Festival to Feature Middle, High School Jazz Band Contest, Performances, Musical Guests

Jazz recording artists The Jeff Hamilton Trio will headline the 43rd Annual Texas A&M University-Kingsville Jazz Festival Friday and Saturday, March 26-March 27 at Jones Auditorium, located on campus near the corner of Armstrong and Santa Gertrudis.
Approximately 30 local middle school and high school jazz bands from across the area—including bands from Austin, Weslaco, Corpus Christi and Laredo—are expected to participate in the two-day event. Participating bands will have the opportunity to compete with their peers, learn from the headlining artist and perform with other student jazz musicians.
Friday, March 26
The Jazz Festival kicks off with the middle school jazz band competition from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Jones Auditorium. Admission to the competition is free.
The Friday evening concert begins at 7 p.m. in Jones Auditorium and features A&M-Kingsville Jazz Band III and The Jeff Hamilton Trio, who will perform songs from their recently released recording, Symbiosis. Awards from the middle school band competition also will be presented during the concert.
Saturday, March 27
High schools jazz bands will compete from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Jones Auditorium. Admission to the competition is free.
The Jeff Hamilton Trio will conduct a free jazz clinic from noon to 1 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Bellamah Music Building.
The Saturday evening concert begins at 7 p.m. in Jones Auditorium and will feature the A&M-Kingsville Jazz Band II, with the Jeff Hamilton Trio serving as a big band rhythm section. The Jeff Hamilton Trio will join the A&M-Kingsville Jazz Band I as they perform standards including “Georgia on My Mind,” “Heart and Soul” and more. Awards from the high school band competition will be presented during the concert.
Admission to the Friday and Saturday evening concerts is $10 per person.

About The Jeff Hamilton Trio
The Jeff Hamilton Trio is comprised of drummer Jeff Hamilton, pianist Tamir Hendelman and bassist Christoph Luty.
Hamilton is considered one of the most celebrated drummers in modern jazz and has worked with some of jazz’s lasting legacies, including Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie and Ray Brown. Hendelman is also part of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra and has performed with Teddy Edwards, Warren Vache and Barbara Morrison. Luty, the long-time bassist of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, has worked with such renowned artists as Dave Brubeck, Diana Krall and James Moody.
The trio have spent nine years together, developing their smooth sound.
