Esteemed South Texas Author, Educator to Speak on Campus October 16
Second presentation scheduled at Nueces County Keach Family Library in Robstown Oct. 17

KINGSVILLE (October 5, 2009) — A man who has brought Texas history to millions comes to Texas A&M University-Kingsville and the Nueces County Keach Family Library to give two free public presentations.
Dr. Arnoldo De León has authored, coauthored or edited a total of 17 books. Among them are the collegiate-level The History of Texas and middle school-level Texas and Texans, both of which are staples in teaching Texas history. He also has penned a number of integral books on the role of Hispanics in Texas history, including Mexican Americans in Texas; North to Aztlán: A History of Mexican Americans in the United States; and the widely praised They Called Them Greasers: Anglo Attitudes Toward Mexicans in Texas 1821-1900.
De León comes to the campus of Texas A&M-Kingsville Friday, Oct. 16, to deliver the presentation “Tejano History at Age 40” from Lecture Hall 132 of the Texas A&M Health Science Center Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy.
An informal reception is scheduled from 11-11:45 a.m. in the lobby of the Rangel College of Pharmacy. The lecture is scheduled from noon to 1 p.m., with a question and answer period to follow.
De León will give a second presentation at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, in the Multipurpose Room of the Nueces County Keach Family Library, located at 1000 Terry Shamsie Boulevard in Robstown.
These events are co-sponsored by Texas A&M University-Kingsville and its Office of Vice President for Student Affairs, Southwest Borderlands Research Center, department of psychology and sociology, and department of history; and the Nueces County Keach Family Library.
About Dr. Arnoldo De León
A native of Robstown, De León has been a faculty member at Angelo State University since September 1973. Currently, he holds the C.J. “Red” Davidson Professorship in History.
He has been a Research Fellow in Mexican American Studies at the University of Houston, as part of its Visiting Scholars program, and was an adjunct graduate faculty member with Texas Christian University from 1995-1998.
In addition to the authored books and monographs previously mentioned, De León has written multiple encyclopedia entries, made 30 academic presentations, published 64 book reviews and produced more than 40 scholarly articles. Several works are forthcoming.
In April of this year, De León was presented the prestigious Texas Tech Chancellor’s Council Distinguished Research Award. Among his other honors are having received a National Defense Education Fellowship to attend graduate school, a Fellow of the Texas State Historical Association, a member of the Texas Institute of Letters, and a Fellow of the West Texas Historical Association.
During his academic career, he has been on the editorial board of several scholarly history journals, including the New Mexico Historical Review, the Southwestern Historical Quarterly and the Journal of Big Bend Studies.
