University Students to Receive Rings

KINGSVILLE (March 30, 2008) — Seniors and graduate students at Texas A&M University-Kingsville who have purchased the school’s official ring will receive them in a special ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 5, at Jones Auditorium on Armstrong Street near the intersection of Santa Gertrudis Boulevard.

In a new tradition this year, the chimes at College Hall will ring at noon Friday, April 3, one time for each of the 74 students who are receiving a ring. Following the ceremony Sunday, the chimes will ring once for each student who picked up their ring.

Graduating students and alumni are able to purchase an official Texas A&M-Kingsville ring. Students have made the ring purchase and ceremony an annual tradition of the university. A committee of students, staff, alumni and faculty worked with a company to design the ring. Its symbols reflect the university’s history and traditions.

These symbols include the school’s mascot, the javelina, because of its tenacity; mesquite and cactus, because they personify the students’ ability to survive and prosper; palm trees, because they are found all over campus; the Lone Star, because it symbolizes the state of Texas; and the College Hall clock tower, because it is a recognized landmark on campus.
