Four Honored as Distinguished Students During Summer Commencement

KINGSVILLE (August 14, 2009) — Four graduates at Texas A&M University-Kingsville’s summer commencement ceremony received the Distinguished Undergraduate Student Award sponsored by the Student Government Association. Only one bachelor’s degree student from each college receives the award.

To be nominated, a student must be a graduating senior with no less than 60 credit hours earned at Texas A&M-Kingsville. The student must have at least a 3.5 grade point average and must be involved in extracurricular activities. The student also must have the endorsement of the dean of the college from which he/she receives a degree.

This summer’s recipients are Evan Carrington Firmin, College of Arts and Sciences; Jorge L. Valerio, Frank H. Dotterweich College of Engineering; Craig McDonald, Dick and Mary Lewis Kleberg College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Human Sciences; Jesaiah Pantel, College of Business Administration.

Firmin, from San Antonio, received a degree in criminology. He is president of the Criminology Club and a member of Sigma Chi. He volunteers at the Kleberg County Sheriff’s Office. He was nominated to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges and has been on the President’s List and the Dean’s List. Firmin was awarded the Presidential Series Blue Scholarship. He graduated with a 3.90 grade point average.

Valerio received a degree in chemical engineering. The San Diego resident is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Mexican American Engineers and Scientists and Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. Valerio was nominated to Who’s Who Among American Universities and Colleges. He is a member of Omega Chi Epsilon Honor Society and Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society. He graduated with a 3.68 grade point average.

Monte Alto resident McDonald received a degree in agriculture science. He is a member of Alpha Tau Alpha Honor Society. He has been on the President’s List, Dean’s List and Honor Roll. He graduated with a 3.51 grade point average.

Pantel, from Kingsville, received a degree in accounting. She is a member of Alpha Chi Honor Society and Delta Mu Delta. She was nominated to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Pantel is a member of the Accounting Society and served as secretary. She has been on the President’s List, Dean’s List and Honor Roll. She received the South Texas Academic Rising Scholars scholarship, the Ralph C. Russell accounting scholarship and the Texas AgFinance Farm Credit Bureau scholarship. She graduated with a 3.64 grade point average.
