Finds Himself on Grammy-Nominated Album for Third Time

KINGSVILLE (February 5, 2008) — Dr. Christopher J. Carrillo, assistant professor of music at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, is a performer on a Grammy-nominated album—for the third time in six years.

Carrillo played as a member of the trumpet section of the Dallas Wind Symphony on the album Garden of Dreams: Music by David Maslanka, released by Reference Recordings. The recording was nominated in the category of Best Engineered Album, Classical.

In 2007, he was principal trumpet with the University of Texas Wind Ensemble on the album, Bells for Stokowski, which was nominated for Best Large Ensemble with Conductor. Prior to that, he was principal trumpet with the same ensemble for a 2002 album, Live at TMEA, nominated for Best Small Ensemble with Conductor.

Carrillo was brought on board all three projects by conductor Jerry Junkin, whom he has worked with extensively for years.

“It is a very special occasion to be a part of a project that the peers in one’s industry respect,” said Carrillo. “I know I’m only a one part of a big collaboration, but I find great comfort in that. I get the most excitement out of being a part of a team.”

Carrillo hasn’t been able to attend any of the award ceremonies, and won’t be able to attend this year’s, but he said he would be watching the results online at www.grammy.com on Sunday, Feb. 10.

When asked how a musician gets to perform with Grammy-nominated ensembles, Carrillo said there’s no one script to follow. “The only universal truths I can think of are to practice and be easy to work. with.”
