Public invited to see Mercury pass between Earth and Sun at celestial viewing Nov. 8

Opportunity won’t arise again until 2016

KINGSVILLE (October 25, 2006) — On Wednesday, Nov. 8, Mercury will pass between the Earth and the sun, in an event that won’t happen again until the year 2016.

The public has a chance to see this happening through solar viewing equipment at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, from the western sundeck of Lon C. Hill Hall, room H202, weather permitting. Viewing time runs from 1:15-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8.

“Adults, students and children are all encouraged to attend this rare celestial phenomenon and see for themselves what it looks like to see a small planet silhouetted against a large star,” offers Dr. Lionel D. Hewett, professor in the physics/geosciences department.
