Students present in state McNair conference

KINGSVILLE (March 10, 2006) — Two students from Texas A&M University-Kingsville’s Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program were invited to present their research at the eighth annual Texas National McNair Research Conference and Graduate School Fair held last month at the University of North Texas.

Sergio Luna, a junior chemical engineering major from Brownsville, presented his research on Swern Oxidation of Alcohols to Aldehydes Using DMSO and Silicon Tetrachloride. His mentor is Dr. Apuba Bhattacharya, associate chemistry professor.

Juan Jose Moreno, a senior mathematics major from Roma, presented his research on Using LEGO® MINDSTORMS™ to Communicate Between Multiple RCX Units. His mentor is Dr. David R. Cecil, mathematics professor.

Students attending had the opportunity to meet with representatives from graduate schools from throughout the nation.

The Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program is named after Dr. Ronald E. McNair, an astronaut who died on the space shuttle Challenger. He was only the second black American to fly in space. The program offers students exposure to the techniques in major research programs by allowing them to conduct research under the guidance of graduate mentors from the disciplines in which they hope to pursue graduate study.

In addition to research, the McNair program prepares students for graduate school admission, helps them with application letters, tutors them for graduate school entrance exams and helps them obtain financial aid information.
