32nd Annual Spring Bilingual Education Conference to be held March 9-10

KINGSVILLE (March 1, 2006) — Hundreds of teachers and administrators are expected to attend the 32 nd annual Spring Bilingual Education Conference at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. The conference will be held Thursday and Friday, March 9-10, at the Memorial Student Union Building.

The event is sponsored by the bilingual education department of the College of Education at A&M-Kingsville.

The purpose of the conference is to promote bilingual education in South Texas and provide the most up to date information on bilingual education through exhibits and workshops.

The conference will begin Thursday evening at 7 p.m. with a reception in ballroom A of the Memorial Student Union Building. During the reception, door prizes will be awarded and registration will be ongoing. Participants will receive a brief overview of what they can expect from the conference and each session.

Sessions begin Friday at 8:30 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m. There will be five conference sessions and over 40 topics to choose from. Some of these topics are “Today’s International Woman,” “Facilitating TAKS Success for English Language Learners,” “What the Majority of Bilingual Teachers in Texas Are Not Doing!,” “Making Learning Centers Successful in the Bilingual Classroom,” “Learning English Without Pressure,” and many more. Each session lasts about an hour and a fifteen minute break is given between each session. Participants will also attend a luncheon where Dr. Carlos K. Blanton will provide the keynote address entitled “Speaking American: Ethnicity, Nationalism and History in the Debate over Bilingual Education.” Blanton was an assistant professor of history at A&M-Kingsville and is the author of “The Strange Career of Education in Texas.”

In addition to the luncheon and special sessions, exhibits will be on display throughout the day showing the latest materials and teaching resources available. Exhibitors include Aldine ISD, Denton ISD, Houston ISD, the Kaplan Early Learning Company and TAKS Coaches. Many educational consultants will also be on hand.

On-site registration is on Thursday from 1-5 p.m. and 7-9:30 p.m. and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to noon. The conference costs $65 per person and is open to the public. Scheduled activities are tentative and subject to change. For more conference information, call 593-2871.
