Good showing for voter registration drive

KINGSVILLE (January 12, 2006) — Turnout was favorable for a voter registration campaign that happened Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 11, in the Memorial Student Union Building on the Texas A&M University-Kingsville campus.
Representatives from the office of Kleberg County Voter Registration were on hand with voter registration cards. After the three hour campaign ended, approximately 30-35 cards had been filled out by students, staff and administrators.
Also on hand were representatives from the Kleberg County Clerk’s office, demonstrating the use of voting machines, voter forms and explaining new precincts.
The campaign was conducted through the A&M-Kingsville branch of the American Democracy Project. The project is a national initiative that seeks to create an intellectual and experiential understanding of civic engagement for undergraduates. It is a co-operative initiative of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, that group’s member institutions and The New York Times. The faculty coordinator of Texas A&M-Kingsville’s American Democracy Project efforts is Dr. Leslie Hunter, Regents professor in history.
According to Hunter, voter registration forms will again be available in the Memorial Student Union Building Jan. 18 & 25 and Feb. 7 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
