Area high school students experience College For A Day

KINGSVILLE (January 18, 2006) — A group of area high school students get to sample college life when they come to Texas A&M University-Kingsville Wednesday, Jan. 25, and take part in College for a Day.

More than 200 Advanced Placement (AP) students from Alice High School, Robstown High School and Hebbronville High School will participate in this year’s event. Each student will have the opportunity to attend classes and seminars in areas of study specific to the students’ interests.

A special seminar on college survival will be held at 1 p.m. in the Memorial Student Union Building, room 219. Dr. Dalton Bigbee, associate vice president of academic affairs, will welcome the students and a list of special guest speakers will follow. Guest speakers include Renee Brown, grant and scholarship coordinator and counselor of student financial aid services; Lynn Stamps of the honors program; Almann Solis, academic coordinator of special programs; Yvonne Saenz, student support services coordinator; and Maj. Oscar Vela of the Army ROTC department. Ricardo Barrera, president of the Student Government Association, will be the master of ceremonies.

A&M-Kingsville’s College for a Day is a collaborative effort initiated and implemented by founder and director V. Betti Tanner, language and literature lecturer, in partnership with area high school AP faculty and students and A&M-Kingsville faculty and students. Over 1,800 area AP students have participated in this program since its inception in 2003.

College for a Day is made possible by the federal initiative Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP), a discretionary grant program designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.

Tanner is pleased with the growth and strength of the College for a Day program. She hopes that the program will eventually include all area high schools’ AP students.
