Two alumni of kinesiology masters program awarded at annual TAHPERD convention

KINGSVILLE (January 13, 2006) — Two alumni of Texas A&M University-Kingsville’s Master of Science in Kinesiology program were honored for their research poster presentations at the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (TAHPERD) annual convention in Corpus Christi Nov. 30-Dec. 3, 2005.

Judy Bloomquist was the lead author of the poster selected as the Outstanding Professional Research Poster Presentation at the conference. The topic of her presentation was “Validity of the Teacher Certification Survey.”

Bloomquist served as a full-time lecturer in the health & kinesiology department at A&M-Kingsville during the 2004-2005 school year, and as a part-time lecturer during the fall 2005 semester. Currently, she is a faculty member with Coastal Bend College.

April Bruene served as lead author of the Outstanding Graduate Student Research Poster Presentation at the conference. The topic of her presentation was “Awareness and Implementation of Teaching for Meaning Principles in Physical Education.”

Bruene is currently a doctoral student at Texas A&M University in College Station.

“ I was very proud of our former students,” said Dr. Christopher M. Hearon, associate professor and chair of the health & kinesiology department. “Historically, HKN (A&M-Kingsville’s health and kinesiology department) has had a strong research showing at this particular conference. In fact, we've won five research awards at this conference, both on the student and professional levels, in the last five years or so. I think it speaks volumes to the commitment our department continues to have to research. It also supports the fact that we believe strongly in getting our students engaged in research as well.”

TAHPERD, founded in 1923, is a not-for-profit professional association of people in the allied fields of health education, physical education, recreation and dance. According to its mission statement, this Texas-based association of more than 4,500 members is committed to the development of knowledge and programs that promote active, healthy lifestyles and enhance skilled, aesthetic motor performance. TAHPERD was and is the only association in Texas serving education in all four disciplines of health, physical education, recreation and dance.
