ROTC program announces scholarship opportunities
KINGSVILLE (January 9, 2006) — The Army ROTC Department at Texas A&M University-Kingsville would like to inform the public of the many scholarship opportunities available through the program.
The ROTC program offers scholarships that will accommodate all students from incoming freshmen to graduate students. Students receiving scholarships must complete degree requirements and become commissioned officers in the U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserve or U.S. Army National Guard.
All Army scholarships provide benefits that include payment for tuition and fees up to $20,000 per year. These fees also include money for books and a monthly stipend.
Three- and four-year Army ROTC Advanced Designee Scholarships are available to incoming freshmen and freshmen who have four years remaining to complete their degree. These scholarships are worth up to $80,000.
Two- and three-year Army ROTC Campus Based Scholarships also are available to students enrolled in or planning to enroll in ROTC. Scholarships are awarded based on ROTC participation, academic performance and physical fitness.
In addition to these scholarships, the military science department also offers many scholarships to students within that department. To be eligible for these scholarships, students must be enrolled in at least three hours of ROTC per semester, participate in physical training and also participate in at least one ROTC extracurricular activity. Scholarships include the Dan Alfaro scholarships, Professor of Military Science scholarships and Javelina Alumni scholarships, which are applicable toward tuition, room, board or books.
The Kingsville Navy League also offers scholarships to students graduating from select high schools in the Kingsville area.
The Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP) provides students with the opportunity to serve as trainees in the U.S. Army Reserve or U.S. Army National Guard while participating in ROTC and attending college at the same time. Students enlist under the split training option and complete Basic and Advanced Individual Training in the summers following the freshmen and sophomore years. When training is completed, the students qualify for Military Occupational Specialty; this makes students eligible for many other military benefits such as the Montgomery GI Bill and the ROTC stipend.
Army ROTC can also be taken as an elective that can fulfill elective hours from most degree plans without any obligation.
For more information on these scholarships and others, contact the Texas A&M University-Kingsville Army ROTC department at 361-593-3394 or 361-593-3201. Information also is listed on A&M-Kingsville’s ROTC website at www.tamuk.edu/rotc.
