University hosts annual NIRA Rodeo March 3-4

KINGSVILLE (February 27, 2006) — Texas A&M University-Kingsville will sponsor the 13th annual National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Rodeo Friday and Saturday, March 3-4, at the J.K. Northway Exposition Center in Kingsville. Preliminary performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, with the finals at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Each performance and the finals will feature nine different events – bareback riding, barrel racing, breakaway roping, bull riding, calf roping, goat tying, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling and team roping.

Tickets are $5 at the door. Students with valid Texas A&M-Kingsville identification are $3. Children under 12 are free.

The NIRA is comprised of 11 regions. Texas A&M-Kingsville is in the southern region, which has the largest membership in the nation with 600 students representing 33 academic institutions.

The southern region is comprised of Louisiana and the eastern half of Texas. The region will host 10 events during the 2001-2002 school year.

Points accumulated at this and other rodeos are added to determine who qualifies for national competition.

Texas A&M-Kingsville is the only university in the state south of Uvalde with a rodeo team. For more information about the rodeo, call 361-592-1358.
