Donations sought for benefit art auction

KINGSVILLE (February 20, 2006) — Students from the communications and theatre arts department at Texas A&M University-Kingsville are currently collecting donations of art to be displayed and sold at an auction that will be held in conjunction with the upcoming production of The Vagina Monologues.

The show and auction will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 6, in the Theatre Arts Building prior to the opening performance at 7:30 p.m. of Eve Ensler’s award-winning play.

Artists and performers will be present at the show to discuss their work during the silent pen auction. All proceeds from the auction will go to the university’s Women’s Center and the world V-Day Trust.

Artists interested in donating their work may contact Brian Bingham at 361-592-7498, 956-642-7205 or imovestars@yahoo.com. Contributors may donate up to five items.

Donations should be paintings, prints, drawings, photography or sculpture in any medium. Starting bids will be based on the works’ size and medium. Donations must be received by 5 p.m. Friday, March 3.

The minimum size for donated art is 8 inches by 10 inches and the maximum size is 24 inches by 36 inches. The maximum size and weight for sculpture is 3 feet by six feet and 30 pounds. All donations must be framed or matted for display. Neat-edge stretched canvases do not require frames. Art must be dry and ready for transport. Anonymous donations will not be accepted.

All donations must have the artist’s name, title, original medium and size displayed on the back of each work. Artists should include a one-page artist’s statement discussing their work and how it relates to the subject matter of the show and a photo of the artist. Both will be displayed with the work.

The production of The Vagina Monologues is sponsored by the university’s communications and theatre arts department and benefits from the $5 admission fee will go to the university’s Women’s Center. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, March 6-8, in The Little Theatre.

V-Day is a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. It is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations.

Through V-Day campaigns, local college students produce benefit performances of Eve Ensler’s production to raise awareness and funds for anti-violence groups. In 2005, over 2,500 V-Day benefit events were presented around the world.
