Texas A&M University-Kingsville Alumnus Becomes New Director of International Admission/Student Services

KINGSVILLE (September 10, 2003) --- Alberto Salinas has been appointed director of international admission and international student services at Texas A&M-Kingsville. He previously served as associate director of the office and also spent two years as an admissions/international evaluation specialist.

Salinas said international enrollment has been on the rise at the university the past few semesters, with nearly 500 international students this semester. He said he is working with an excellent, knowledgeable staff that has helped streamline the processes involved with international admissions.

“ All the credit really goes to them,” Salinas said. “They provide an awesome amount of support and bring a wealth of knowledge to their jobs, and it would be impossible to operate these offices without them. We are looking forward to growing and providing a quality service to our past, present and future international students at Texas A&M-Kingsville.”

Salinas is very familiar with the campus and its operations since he earned his bachelor of applied arts and sciences degree and a master’s degree in sociology from the university. He is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in bilingual education at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
As a student, Salinas was very active in a variety of campus activities. He served as president of Alpha Kappa Delta-Iota, the international honor society for sociologists for two
years and was vice-president of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society. Salinas was treasurer of the President’s Council Organization and served as president of the Presidential Ambassadors from 1998-2000.

He was a member of the Pre-law Society, the Residence Hall Association and Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (MECHA). He chaired the Bell and Chime Committee and the Traffic Appeals Committee and co-chaired the Light Tower Committee and the Student Organization Funds Committee.

Salinas also worked as a student assistant in the Office of the President while he was an undergraduate student. He has been a resident advisor in the Campus Housing Office and a peer mentor for Special Services, both at A&M-Kingsville.
