TAMUK Announces Chemistry Olympics Winners
KINGSVILLE (May 16, 2002) At Texas A&M University-Kingsville's
chemistry department's 29th annual Chemistry Olympics, St. Mary's Hall
High School from San Antonio placed first in the Division I sweepstakes
for the second year in a row. The team scored 3,273 points to beat Pharr-San
Juan-Alamo North High School who scored 2,818 points.
In Division II schools, J.B. Alexander High School from Laredo also repeated
as first place winner with 2,012 points. Following in second place was
Believer's Academy in San Antonio with 1,821 points.
In Division III schools, Bishop High School placed first in the sweepstakes
award with 1,126 points. Cotulla High School was second in the sweepstakes
competition with 927 points.

Qualitative Analysis
Division I Siyu Chen and Lauren Wheeler, H. M. King High School
in Kingsville, first; Miranda Vella and Lani Lawson, Flour Bluff High
School in Corpus Christi, second; and Anna Barrera and Yolanda Suarez,
Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North High School. The first place team from H. M.
King was only seven seconds faster than Flour Bluff and all three schools
correctly identified all five unknowns in less than five minutes.
Division II Aaron Moore and Caleb Robinson, Believer's Academy
in San Antonio, first; Matthew Carroll and Alex Garza, J.B. Alexander
in Laredo, second; and Ben Montgomery and Kevin Sheridan, Incarnate Word
Academy in Corpus Christi, third.
Written Competition
Division I, Chemistry I Don Fox and Nicki Martinez, Pharr-San Juan-Alamo
North High School, first; Miriam Goldberg and Jessica Spector, St. Mary's
Hall High School in San Antonio, second; and Matt Miller and Nansi Singh,
St. Mary's Hall in San Antonio, third. There had to be a tie breaker between
the first and second place teams to determine a winner.

T-shirt Design
Bishop High School took the award in the t-shirt design competition. Nathan
Barrientes and Jeremy Martinez accepted the award for their team. Pharr-San
Juan-Alamo North High School took second. They were represented by Valeria
and Verenice Olmeda. Third place was won by Ingleside High School. Andrew
and Amanda Evans accepted the award.
