Faces of America Addresses Questions of Multiculturalism

KINGSVILLE (August 22, 2002) — The South Texas community is invited to join the administration, faculty, staff and students at Texas A&M University-Kingsville in a special remembrance of those who lost their lives Sept. 11, 2001.

At 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept, 11, the Campus Activities Board in conjunction with the Office of Student Activities will present Faces of America in Jones Auditorium. Faces of America is a one-person show addressing the multiculturalism in today's society.

The presentation is free to everyone, however, parents are advised the performance includes mature discussions that may not be suitable for children under 12. At the conclusion of the performance, the audience is encouraged to participate in an open discussion with the performer.

One actress, Fran de Leon, will portray eight characters representing the different cultural aspects of society in America today: African, Asian, Mexican-American, Native American, East Indian, European, Happa (mixed blood) and a Mixed Blood American referred to in the play as Fuzzy.

Faces of America has toured around the country with solo performances by several noted stage veterans and has been honored by standing ovations at large and small, public, private and community colleges and universities as well as corporate and community events. This show was featured at the 51st and 52nd United Nations Days.

Faces of America was first produced at the Los Angeles Theatre Center in March 1995.
As an actor, de Leon has worked with several noted theatre companies including East West Players, The Pacific Resident Theatre Ensemble, The Educational Theatre Company and Will & Company, producers of Faces of America.

Writer/director Colin Cox is the artistic director and founder of Will & Company, a Los Angeles based theatre company dedicated to arts in education and multicultural work in classic and contemporary pieces.
