Dr. Christopher Carrillo, Trumpet
      Assistant Professor of Music
 

Dr. Carrillo joined the faculty of Texas A&M University-Kingsville in 2005 after having taught at both The University of Texas at Austin and The University of Texas at San Antonio.  He holds degrees from The University of Texas at Austin and The University of Memphis and did additional studies in performance at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, Scotland.  His primary trumpet teachers include Ray Sasaki, Raymond Crisara, David Spencer, Albert Ligotti, and Edward Sandor.

As a classical and commercial musician, Dr. Carrillo currently performs as Co-Principal Trumpet with the Victoria Symphony Orchestra and has recently performed with the Austin Symphony, Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, Disney College Orchestra, Abilene Philharmonic, Corpus Christi Symphony, Jacksonville Symphony, Austin Lyric Opera and Opera Memphis.  Additionally, he has performed as a local musician for several Broadway touring productions and worked with such varied artists as Marvin Hamlisch, Chuck Mangione, Toni Tenille, John Pizzarelli and Bob Brookmeyer.  

As a strong advocate for new music, Dr. Carrillo has recently performed as Principal Trumpet with The University of Texas Wind Ensemble in the world premiere performance of John Corigliano’s Symphony No. 3, “Circus Maximus” at Carnegie Hall in New York City.  Additional premieres include works by David Del Tredici, Kevin Puts, Chinary Ung, Dan Welcher, Maurice Wright, Vache Sharafyan, Stephen Barber, and recent commissions for Trumpet by Roger Dannenburg, Young-Hwan Yeo, Rob Deemer, Sam Pluta, P. Kellach Waddle, and Andrew Dickinson.

Dr. Carrillo was the Effie Potts-Sibley Scholar in Music at The University of Texas at Austin, Presser Scholar at The University of Memphis, and is an alumnus of the Disney College Music Program and the International Festival-Institute at Round Top.
