Students, Employees Feel Impact of Hurricane Ike
Hurricane Ike may have spared the Coastal Bend, but the storm’s aftermath is far-reaching – affecting some students, faculty and staff at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
To help, Vice President for Student Affairs Terisa Remelius is coordinating a fundraising drive to help students and employees with families who are facing hardship in the wake of the hurricane.
“There are several students and staff who have come to the attention of administration as having been affected by the storm,” Remelius said. “We have learned of employees and students whose homes were destroyed, family members’ jobs lost, and whose extended families have been forced to move in with them for at least a month. In some cases, students are unable to pay their bills because they are spending money to support their families, staff are unsure of where their extended families will live, and individuals are unable to return for classes because they have no transportation.
“I’m certain our university community wants to come together to help.”
Remelius’ office is collecting monetary donations to help students and employees who are identified as needing immediate assistance due to Hurricane Ike. All donations are logged in, and the university’s Business Office is keeping the money locked up for safe keeping until it is distributed.
Donations should be dropped off to the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, 220 College Hall. For more information, contact Remelius at 593-3612 or terisa.remelius@tamuk.edu.
