Graduate Exchange Student Application Procedures

1. Complete and submit the online application and pay the $50.00 Non-refundable Application Fee through applytexas.org.

2. Mail or email a copy of transcripts with proof of bachelor’s degree (with English Translation) to OISP.

3. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 79 (Internet-based) or 550(Paper-based) is the university minimum requirement for all Graduate students. This score must be sent directly from the Educational Testing Services (ETS) and dated within two (2) years of enrollment to the Office of Graduate Studies. Residual (Institutional) TOEFL exams taken at another institution will not be accepted. TOEFL(Code#6822).

4. All international students are required to take the TOEFL or IELTS unless they qualify for a waiver.

      The following are considered equivalencies to the TOEFL scores of 79 (iBT)/500 (PBT):

  • IELTS 6.0 or above overall band score.
  • GRE Verbal Score 400 (Score on the Prior GRE Scale) or 146 (Score on the Current GRE Scale)
  • Students who have completed their entire formal education at the secondary or postsecondary level in the following countries are exempt from the TOEFL requirement: American Samoa, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada (except Quebec), Cayman Islands, Dominica, Federated States of Micronesia, Grenada, Guam, Guyana, Jamaica, Liberia, New Zealand, United Kingdom (all), Trinidad-Tobago, and Virgin Islands. Please note: Applicants from Puerto Rico, where Spanish is the primary language, are required to submit a TOEFL or equivalent.
  • Based on the review and decision of the College of Graduate Studies, students who have earned at least 12 credits, with a grade C or better, in university-level courses from a U.S. institution or an institution in one of the countries listed above, may be exempt from TOEFL.
  • TAMUK IEP completion of program certificate with an Advanced Plus. (TAMUK IEP placement test and recommendations from the IEP director are considered)
  • Completion of the advanced-level Texas Intensive English Program (TIEP) offered by the Texas International Education Consortium (TIEC).

5. Once all the required documents have been reviewed and accepted, the Graduate Studies office will send an automatic email to the student when they have been admitted.  Students can also check their application status in Blue & Gold http://www.tamuk.edu/bluegold/ to see the items that have been received and any additional information. 

6. The Office of International Studies & Programs Office will send a “Welcome Letter” to the student and the student will be required to submit the following documents to the Office of International Studies & Programs. 

  • Form OISP-300, Exchange Student Application
  • Copy of passport biographic page
  • Completed Form OISSS-50, Financial Certification. For a reciprocal exchange student, the student will only be responsible for living expenses, books, insurance, application fee, and exchange student processing/registration fee. TAMUK Tuition, will be waived for reciprocal exchange student.

7. Once OISP received all the document, OISP will issue Form DS-2019 and mail all the documents to students so they can apply for J-1 visas.

8.  Students should access available courses via “Blue and Gold” to select list of courses according to preference and submit the list of preferred courses to the Office of International Studies and Programs via email to StudyAbroad@tamuk.edu.  (see course selection instruction)

Students under the 20 years of age or who have earned less than 30 college credit hours are required to reside in the university residence halls.  Please visit and submit housing application.  Note that a Texas law requires students living on campus housing must submit proof of Meningitis Vaccination
