Student Orientation FAQ
Do I have to pay to attend orientation?
Yes. Freshmen are charged a one-time $75 orientation fee, and $35 of that fee is required as a deposit upon registering for orientation. The remaining $40 will be added to the student's first tuition bill.
Who should attend orientation?
All first year full-time students and full-time transfer students with less than 12 credit hours must attend our Hoggie Days orientation program. Transfer students with 12 or more credit hours have the option to participate in Transfer Thursdays.
When will I get more information about orientation?
After registering online for orientation, you will receive an e-mail within 3-5 business days confirming your registration. You will continue to receive reminders, updates and other important information regarding your Hoggie Days session up until at least one week prior to your session date. The Hoggie Days website will also contain updated information such as helpful maps and tentative agendas, so please be sure to visit the website often. How do I register for Hoggie Days?
Is orientation mandatory for new students?
All new, full-time students with less than 12 credit hours are required to participate and attend all sessions during their orientation. Hoggie Days is designed to help you feel comfortable and confident on our campus when you start your classes. We believe that Orientation is a vital part of transitioning into college life. **Please keep in mind that all new students with less than 12 hours will be assessed the $75 mandatory orientation fee regardless of participation.
What should I do if I cannot attend orientation?
If you cannot attend orientation because of extenuating circumstances, you must send written notification to: Office of Admission, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, MSC 116, Kingsville, Texas 78363. Please keep in mind that you will be billed an orientation fee regardless of attendance at an orientation session.
What if I need to change my session date?
There are a limited number of spaces available for each academic college, and Hoggie Days sessions fill quickly. If for any reason you need to change your session date, your options may be limited depending on your timing because registration is a live first-come, first-served system. You can change your session date following the same instructions you used to register for Hoggie Days. In Blue and Gold, click the (Cancel?) link next to the date you are registered for and select the (Register?) link next to the new date you plan to attend. Please note you will have to cancel your registration for one session before you will be able to register for a different session. If the new session you try to register for is full or if you have trouble changing your session date, please contact us via e-mail at email@example.com to inform us of your request for a change.
Will there be activities for my family?
There is a Family Orientation Program that runs concurrently with Hoggie Days. Parents, family members and guests will have an opportunity to hear from representatives of key areas on campus and ask questions that are vital to their student's success. Students and family members will also get to spend time together in some of the general sessions such as financial aid, business services, and residence life. There is no cost for families to attend the Family Orientation Program although they are responsible for paying for their own meals while on campus.
Will I be able to purchase my books during orientation?
Yes, there will be time during or after orientation for new students to purchase books. To purchase textbooks, be sure to bring a check, cash, or a credit card and a copy of your class schedule.
How do I register for classes?
You will register for classes at orientation once you have met with your academic advisor. Adequate time to meet one-on-one with an academic advisor as well register for classes is allotted for students during each Hoggie Days session. Your academic advisor will assist you in choosing classes for your major and will help you register you for your classes. Orientation Leaders will also be available to assist with this process and answer any questions you may have.
How do I get my Javelina Express card (student ID)?
Before you register for classes during your Hoggie Days session, you will have the opportunity to visit the Javelina Express Card Office to take your student ID photo. You will be presented with your ID card during the orientation program. Your ID will be needed throughout your college career for purchasing parking permits, getting into sporting events, utilizing library services, accessing your residence hall and meal plan, and some professors require it for exams.
How do I get my parking permit?
Students will be able to purchase parking permits during or after orientation. You will be able to purchase your parking permit through the Business Office. How do I take care of my bill or find out about financial aid?
Each Hoggie Days session includes informational presentations from financial aid and business office representatives for students to gain general information about payment options and financial services. Additional free time will be provided where students will have the opportunity to speak with financial aid and business representatives individually about specific needs and to take care of any necessary matters.
