I'm in, now what?

Hoggie Days

Summer

Attending one of our summer orientation sessions, which we call Hoggie Days, will help start your college career off on the right foot! Hoggie Days are designed to give you a preview of the offices and organizations that will help you make a smooth transition to your life as a college student at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Most importantly you will be able to register for your fall classes while attending Hoggie Days. Each Hoggie Days is a two day program and you will receive a registration brochure in the mail with all of the important details.

Participation in Hoggie Days is mandatory. All new students, including those with less than 30 hours of transfer credit, are required to attend a Hoggie Days session. Transfer students with more than 30 hours of credit are also strongly encouraged to participate.

January

If you are starting classes in the spring, there is a Hoggie Days in January just for you! Information will be sent to you in the mail on how to register for the program.

How do I register for classes?

Selecting a major

You should determine an area of study in which you are interested as soon as possible. If you have not already made this decision, discuss possible options with your parents, teachers and guidance counselor. Those who make this decision early and adhere to a plan are often more successful than those who delay selecting a major.

Placement Exams

You must take at least one placement exam if you are planning to matriculate at Texas A&M-Kingsville. Choose from THEA, ACCUPLACER, ASSET or COMPASS and complete this exam several months before you plan to enroll. You must also have taken either an ACT or SAT exam prior to being admitted to Texas A&M-Kingsville. Have all of your scores sent to Texas A&M-Kingsville immediately after assessment completion. Your advisor will use all of these scores to assist you in selecting appropriate courses.

Meeting your advisor

One of the most important meetings you will have early in your college career will be the first meeting with your advisor. Together you will develop a course schedule for the first semester based on placement scores and your intended major. You will continue to work with an advisor for you entire college career, eventually designing a degree plan focused toward successful completion of all courses and graduation.

Registration

You will learn how to register in a training session occurring during summer orientation. You are required to attend one of these orientations referred to as Hoggie Days. All students use an on-line registration process, Web for Students, to complete the registration process. After first meeting with your advisor and course selection, you will use a supervised computer lab in the library to register for your first semester of courses.

Your degree plan

You must follow and approved degree plan in order to graduate from Texas A&M-Kingsville. Thus early selection of a major, successful course completion and a written degree plan are strategies for success at Texas A&M-Kingsville. Your advisor will help you select an appropriate degree plan based on your intended major field of study. Developing a degree plan early in your academic career will provide matriculation focus.

Academic calendar

You should be aware of the academic calendar and the consequences of deadlines established by Texas A&M-Kingsville. There are certain dates each semester that relate to payment of fees, dropping and adding courses, posting of grades and semester final exams. You should be aware of these dates and conduct yourself accordingly. The calendar can be found at http://www.tamuk.edu/academics/catalog/calendar/
