Recycling
The Recycling Program is housed within the Department of Risk Management & Sustainability. In 2011, the Recycling Program was integrated with the City of Kingsville well-established waste management resources in order to increase efficiency and the recovery of materials diverted from the solid waste stream. Additionally, the TAMUK partnered with Goodwill Industries of South Texas to support the Goodwill mission to “create life-changing opportunities for people with disabilities or barriers to employment” by becoming a major donation collection point.
Routes
With a few exceptions, it is the responsibility of the Recycling staff to transport materials from various containers throughout the campus, located internally and externally of university buildings. The University is running the special service to transport recyclable waste to the Kingsville Recycling Facility.
Storage areas are serviced by recycling personnel as part of two recycling routes. Almost all buildings on campus are serviced at least once a day, although many have multiple pickups daily. All materials are brought to the Kingsville Recycling Facility, located at the City of Kingsville.
Recycling in University Residence Halls
Housing and Residential Life are major contributors to the recycling program. Recycling containers are centrally located within each apartment complex. Residential Life in conjunction with the Office of Sustainability handles the promotion of the program within student housing. Our residence halls are serviced by the University Recycling Program as part of the normal recycling routes.
Promotional Materials
Have you ever wondered why the Javelina Recycling Program does not hand out promotional materials (flyers, trinkets, etc)? That's because it is keeping with our philosophy that waste reduction is more important than recycling. We already have too much loose paper given to us from event vendors and other promotions. Many of these handouts find their way directly into the trash without ever being used, as we have seen most of the time. If there is something you would like us to give you, let us know. We can probably get it to you through our reuse program and therefore continue with our philosophy.
