Americans with Disabilities Act
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 makes it unlawful to discriminate in employment against any qualified individual with a disability. The act defines a disability as a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or major life activities (such as caring for oneself, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning and working).
In accordance with ADA, all reasonable accommodation possibilities (changes or adjustment in the job or the work environment that would permit a qualified employee to continue doing his/her job) must be investigated. It is each employee’s responsibility to notify their supervisor if they believe an ADA accommodation is required. The supervisor will forward the request upward and the Human Resources Department will request a fact-finding investigation that will result in an opinion at to what, if anything will be considered reasonable.
