Community invited to rememeber the events of Sept. 11, 2001 during Texas A&M-Kingsville memorial

Texas A&M University-Kingsville will be hosting “Lest We Forget,” a series of commemorative events to observe the 10th anniversary of the profound events that took place on September 11, 2001.

These events will begin with a tribute Javelina football game with a  pre-show at 6:35 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 at Javelina Stadium. The pre-show will kick off with a fly-over by Naval Air Station Kingsville (weather permitting) along with a rendition of “God Bless America” sung by A&M-Kingsville Assistant Professor of Voice and Opera Dr. Melinda Brou. The Javelina football game will then proceed at its scheduled time of 7 p.m.  Free admission will be offered to those with a valid military identification. A&M-Kingsville students are free with a valid identification card.

A&M-Kingsville’s Lest We Forget memorial will continue with the 9-11 Remembrance Ceremony at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11 at the Conner Museum, 905 W Santa Gertrudis. Kleberg County Judge, Juan Escobar speak about the events of Sept. 11. A tree and stone rededication will follow. A hand-crafted chain will be present to signify each life lost 10 years ago during the attacks. The chain will then proceed with a Walk of Honor to Jones Auditorium for a Concert of Remembrance.

The events continue with A Concert of Remembrance at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11 in Jones Auditorium, near the corner of Armstrong Street and Santa Gertrudis Avenue. A proclamation will be presented by Texas State Representative J.M. Lozano Jr. followed by variety of musical performances in recognition of the Sept. 11 anniversary. Hanns Mimberg, director of planning and project management at A&M-Kingsville, will share his recollections of September 11, from a survivor’s perspective.

An art installation commemorating the events of Sept. 11 and created A&M-Kingsville Department of Art, Communications and Theatre adjunct instructor Robert Peña will be unveiled at the Jones Auditorium lobby before the concert. The six foot statue will be displayed for the audience and community members to view before and after the procession.
