Dr. Ashraf Yaseen

Dr. Ashraf Yaseen received his B.S. in Computer Science & Information Technology from Jordan University of Science and Technology in 2002, his M.S. in Computer Science from New York Institute of Technology in 2003, and his PhD. in Computer Science from Old Dominion University in 2014. He worked as an instructor at Jordan University of Science and Technology from 2003 to 2007, and as an Assistant Professor at the department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Central State University in Ohio from 2013 to 2014. He is currently working as an Assistant Professor in the department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

Teaching: Dr. Yaseen has taught or is teaching Operating Systems, Database Systems, Computer Communications Networks, Computer Architecture, and Programming courses. He developed 2 courses in Bioinformatics, 1 course in Machine Learning and currently working on the development of a new course in Big Data.

Research and Scholarly Activities:  Dr. Yaseen research interests include Bioinformatics, Machine Learning, Big Data, and High Performance Computing. These areas are fertile sources for interesting computing intensive problems. He have focused on improving the predictions of proteins’ structural features, such as predicting the secondary structures, disulfide bonds, solvent accessibility, and residue contacts. Those structural features represent the intermediate steps along the way towards protein tertiary structure prediction. He has also focused on proposing efficient computational approaches, in protein modeling, suitable for multi-core and many-core architectures. The goal is to develop new systems for protein modeling that use machine learning methods and current high performance computing resources to efficiently predict proteins’ structural features. The outcomes of such systems will increase our understanding of the biological processes leading into better knowledge of protein structures and functions. In collaboration with colleagues, Dr. Yaseen is working on novel large-scale data analysis methods built on top of the randomized algorithms to model protein structures targeting a new level of accuracy.

Efficient protein modeling tools can eventually lead to the manufacturing of additional drugs to fight against conditions like Alzheimer and Mad-Cow diseases. However, many details remain unknown when considering the nanoscale interactions among the atoms that constitute protein molecules. That makes protein modeling a challenging field and a major research effort in computational biology

Research Interest: Bioinformatics, Machine Learning, Big Data, and High Performance Computing.
