Career Resource Room The Career Resource Room
contains a collection of career, employer, and job-search
information as well as information on graduate programs
throughout the country. The Resource Room provides you with
an opportunity to browse through directories, corporate
information, and other publications. The hundreds of job
openings that we receive in the mail each week are kept in
binders in the Resource Room. We also have several
videotapes from various corporations, agencies, and school
districts, as well as "how-to" tapes on subjects
such as interviewing and dressing for success. You may view
these in the Resource Room or check them out overnight. We
also have a library of books on job-search strategies that
may be checked out. Failure to return these resources will
result in a hold being placed on your student record. There
are computers available for surfing the web and formatting
your resume.
Employment Follow-up When your post-graduate plans are finalized, please inform us by contacting our office and by completing any surveys and questionnaires that you might receive. We are frequently asked what Texas A&M University-Kingsville students do after graduation. The information that you provide us is very helpful in ensuring that our statistics are accurate, and you can be assured that we keep your information confidential. Be aware that we will
keep your computerized file for five years after graduation.
You may keep it active for a longer period of time by
contacting us regularly and keeping your file information
up-to-date. If we do not hear from you within five years
after graduation, your file will be deleted. Fax Services Career Services provides a
fax service for students who are registered with us. There
is a $1.00 per fax charge (regardless of the number of
pages). All resumes faxed at student request must
have an accompanying cover letter. Employers may call at any
time and request faxed resumes (at no cost).
Individual Career Counseling Students are encouraged to
discuss career development and job search plans with the
staff in Career Services. A full-time, professional
counselor is available to help with career exploration and
decisions. In the event that you are undecided about a major
or which career path to follow, we recommend that you
utilize MyRoad.com,
an interactive computer guidance program that helps you
explore your interests, values, and occupational aptitudes,
then arrange to sit down and review the results with the
counselor. If you need assistance with any aspect of your
employment search, such as developing a personal strategy
and determining ways to identify opportunities to secure
employment, call and make an appointment to speak with a
counselor.
Information Sessions Many employers host
Information Sessions the evening before they begin on-campus
interviews. We strongly encourage students to attend these
sessions; in some cases they are mandatory before a company
will interview you. Be sure to check to see if the companies
in which you are interested in are hosting Information
Sessions, then plan to attend. This is a good opportunity to
learn more about a company, to find out about specific
positions, and to meet the recruiters with whom you will be
interviewing in a more informal and comfortable setting.
Job Announcements Employers frequently advertise specific job openings or general employment opportunities through the Career Services Center. These announcements are posted in binders in the Resource Room and you may come by and view these books at any time. Thousands of these vacancies are listed each year, so don't miss out on this valuable resource. We also encourage you to become familiar with the technological resources for help with your employment search. Using the Internet, you may run a search and can access literally thousands of career opportunities. We have a handout available in our office that lists dozens of specific addresses of Web sites for employment opportunities. All information concerning
employment, on-campus interviewing, and job announcements is
mailed to all departments on campus with a request to post
the information. Career Services has specific bulletin
boards in the College of Business Administration, the
College of Engineering, Lewis Hall and Cousins Hall. We post
information in the SUB and at the kiosk in the mall area, as
well as on our own boards in Eckhardt Hall.
Resume Review Service A resume review service is
available to students who wish to have a Career Services
staff member proofread their resume before submission to
employers. Resumes may be dropped off in the main office and
picked up 24 hours later. Each semester, the Career
Service Center conducts workshops on job-seeking skills such
as writing a resume and preparing for an interview. These
are scheduled periodically - check with our office or our Calendar
of Events for specific times and locations. We
will be happy to conduct a workshop or presentation for any
student organization or class. |
