Title IX

Reporting an Incident


Faculty, staff and students who have experienced sexual harassment or sex-based misconduct are encouraged to file a report with the university or with the police.  Faculty, Staff, and Students are also encouraged to seek medical treatment.  The Title IX Coordinator can assist reporters with contacting the appropriate police department and community resources.

If you were  Sexually Assaulted:

  • Get to a safe place
  • Tell someone who will help and support you.  Call a trusted friend or family member.  Contact one of the confidential resources listed below.
  • Seek medical care.  A sexual assault may result in injuries that are not visible.  Your own family care physician can provide medical assistance and treatment.  Medical professionals are not required to call law enforcement when treating an adult patient for a sexual assault.  You may also have a Sexual Assault Exam, performed by a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE).  The SANE will collect evidence and treat any injuries you may have sustained, but must be done within 5 days of the assault.  The exam can be completed even if you choose not to involve police and file a report.
  • Medical testing.  If you suspect you were drugged, you should be tested, ideally within 24 hours of ingestion.
  • Pregnancy.  If you want a pill to prevent pregnancy ("Morning After Pill"), it can be obtained over the counter at a pharmacy or at Student Health and Wellness.
  • Preserve evidence.  If you think you want evidence collected, do not bathe, douche, shower, brush your teeth, or go to the bathroom.  Do not change your clothes.  Keep any clothing or sheets, blankets, etc, undisturbed.  If they must be moved, keep each item separate and do not place them into a plastic bag.  Do not delete or destroy and text messages, emails, voicemails, written notes, or any other documents that be relevant. 
  • Report to the Police.  To file a report or to learn about your options regarding reporting, contact the University or Kingsville Police Department.

Campus Reporting Options

Persons who have experienced or witnessed incidents of discrimination based on sex: Sexual Harassment, Sexual Assault, Sexual Exploitation, Dating Violence, Domestic Violence, Stalking (based on sex), discrimination due to a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity, and Discrimination due to Pregnancy are encourage to make a report to the Title IX Coordinator, Deputy Coordinators, or another employee of the university. 

All employees are required to share reports of sexual harassment or sex-based misconduct with the Title IX Coordinator who is an official with the authority to institute corrective measures. 

TAMUK has actual knowledge of a notice of sexual harassment or sex-based misconduct once a report has been made to the Title IX Coordinator, deputy Title IX Coordinators, Human Resources, Student Affairs, the Office of the Provost, or the President of the university.

Anonymous Reporting

Anonymous reports can be made via EthicsPoint .  Reporters should select universities as the branch in which the violation took place and TAMUK as the location.  Reporters will be able to select that they want to remain anonymous and will be able to withhold their contact information.  Please note that limited information may limit our ability to respond to a complaint.

Confidential Reporters

Students who would like to discuss incidents with a TAMUK employee who can keep information confidential can contact the counselors at Student Health and Wellness.  You can schedule an appointment at 361-593-3991.  Student Health and Wellness also offers online counseling services through Tele-Mental Health services to qualifying participants.

Employee reporters may obtain confidential guidance through the Employee Assistance Program. Confidential guidance is not a substitute for mandatory reporting obligations. An Employee must report incidents of discrimination that they have witnessed or that have been reported to the employee during the course and scope of their job description.  The Employee Assistance Programs offers assistance 24/7 for TAMUK employees including free and confidential assessments, referrals, and counseling.

File a Police Report

Faculty staff and students are encouraged to file a police report.  To file a report or to learn about your options regarding reporting, contact the University Police Department or Kingsville Police Department.  The Title IX Coordinator may also assist the reporter with contacting the appropriate police department.

The law enforcement agencies listed above are available for emergency response, facilitating medical transport, investigating incidents of a criminal nature, referrals, and preserving evidence. UPD officers are required to report allegations of sexual misconduct to the Title IX Coordinator.
