Description
Standard State: solid at 298 K
Color: Silvery White
Urbain described a process by which Marignacs ytterbium could be separated into the two
elements, ytterbium and lutetium. These elements were identical with
"aldebaranium" and "cassiopeium", independently discovered by von
Welsbach about the same time. Lutetium occurs in very mall amounts in nearly all minerals containing yttrium, and is
present in monazite to the extent of about .003%, which is a commercial source.
Virtually no other commercial uses have been found yet for Lutetium, as it is one of
the most costly of the rare earth elements.
