Samantha Cantu (Exercise Science-Pre PT) was named the recipient of the National American Kinesiology Association's 2015 National AKA Scholar at the undergraduate level. This award goes to the top kinesiology undergraduate in the nation. Congratulations, Samantha!

Dr. Nestor Sherman, Regents Professor, was awareded the College of Education and Human Performance Outstanding Senior Faculty member award, and Dr. David Cutton, Assistant Professor, was awarded the CEHP Outstanding Junior Faculty Member award. Congratulations Dr. Sherman and Dr. Cutton!

Seven faculty members (Bliss, Cutton, Daniel, Fiddler, Gaines, Hearon and Sherman) and twenty-three undergraduate/graduate students in the exercise sciences attended the Annual Meeting of the Texas Regional Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine (TACSM) in Austin, Texas on February 26-27. The TAMUK Student Bowl team, comprised of undergraduate students Ashley Balles, Samantha Cantu (Captain), David Salinas, and Joel Perez (alternate) competed in the annual Jeopardy-style quiz bowl with 30 additional teams from schools around the state. The TAMUK team placed 7th in the bowl. Undergraduate Research Award winners, Ashley Balles and Samantha Cantu, and HKN Lecturer Joe Seacrest, also participated in the student poster session at the meeting. Cantu won 1st place in the Undergraduate Research Poster category, Seacrest won 2nd place in the Masters Research Poster category, and Balles won 1st place in the Member's Choice/Open Research Poster category. Additionally, Cantu received the TACSM Major of the Year from Texas A&M University-Kinsgsville and the TACSM Undergraduate Scholar Award. The TACSM Undergraduate Scholar Award is given to the top undergraduate student in the state within the exercise sciences. Dr. Chris Hearon was also awarded the TACSM Service Award, one of two faculty honors bestowed by this society, for his service to the Texas Regional Chapter as Executive Director from 2008-2012, Director of Membership from 2006-2008, and several committees.

The faculty of the Department of Health & Kinesiology have named three students as Major of the Year in the department's programs. Ms. Samantha Cantu was named the Major of the Year for Exercise Science/Exercise Science Pre-PT/Exercise Science-Performance Psychology, Ms. Kelsey Brown was named the Major of the Year for EC-12/Physical Education, and Ms. Caitlin Hollingshead was named Major of the Year for Sport Business. Congratulations to you all!!

At today's commencement ceremony, Exercise Science/Pre-Physical Therapy graduate Joel Obregon received the College of Education and Human Performance Outstanding Graduate Award. Joel will be entering the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock this summer. Congratulations, Joel!

The Health & Kinesiology Nation swept the College of Education and Human Performance annual faculty and staff awards for the 2013-2014 academic year. Dr. Chris Hearon, Professor and Chair, was awarded the CEHP Outstanding Senior Faculty Member award, Dr. Lorraine Killion, Assistant Professor, was awarded the CEHP Outstanding Junior Faculty Member award, and Ms. Breanne Flores-Contreras, Senior Academic Advisor II, was awarded the CEHP Outstanding Staff Member award. Five faculty members (Bliss, Cutton, Fiddler, Gaines, and Hearon) and fifteen undergraduate/graduate students in the exercise sciences attended the Annual Meeting of the Texas Regional Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine (TACSM) in Ft. Worth, Texas on February 27-28. At the meeting, the TAMUK Student Bowl, comprised of undergraduate students Joel Obregon, Gene Paez, Samantha Cantu, and Ashley Balles (alternate) competed in the annual Jeopardy-style quiz bowl with 29 additional teams from schools around the state. The TAMUK team placed 12th in the bowl, and first among the South Texas schools. Undergraduate Research Award winners, Joel Obregon and Gene Paez, also participated in the student poster session at the meeting. Obregon, the department's Major of the Year in Exercise Science, also received the TACSM Major of the Year from Texas A&M-Kingsville at the meeting.

Alan Harwell of KRIS TV (NBC, Corpus Christi, TX) visited the Department of Health & Kinesiology's Sport Marketing and Promotions class today. Mr. Harwell talked with students about media sports marketing, and assisted students in creating a promotional video for the department's Sport Business program. Dr. Nestor Sherman has been named Regents Professor by the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents. Over the last two decades Dr. Sherman's teaching performance, scholarly productivity, commitment to student engagement, dedication to the University, work ethic, and character are reflective of someone that embodies the spirit of this prestigious recognition. Dr. Stacey Gaines was announced as the new Associate Chair of the Department of Health and Kinesiology and Graduate Coordinator of the Kineisology masters program. With this change, Dr. Mike Daniel has become the Program Coordinator of the Exercise Science program.

The Department of Health & Kinesiology welcomes new faculty member, Dr. Bruce Lund starting Fall, 2013.
Dr. Lund joins the HKN faculty after recently completing his doctorate at Middle Tennessee State University. Dr. Lund also completed an M.S. from Middle Tennessee State University and a B.A. from Hope College (MI). He will be coordinating, and teaching in courses within, the Sport Business program.

The Department of Health & Kinesiology welcomes new faculty members, Dr. Ryan Fiddler and Mr. Matt Bliss starting Summer I, 2013.
Dr. Fiddler joins the HKN faculty after recently completing his doctorate at Oklahoma State University. Dr. Fiddler also completed an M.S. from Oklahoma State University and a B.S. from Northeastern State University (OK). He will be teaching in the area of exercise science and physiology.
Mr. Bliss is ABD from Kent State University, where he also received his M.S. degree. He also holds a B.S. from Mansfield University (PA). He will be teaching in the area of exercise science and physiology.

The Department of Health & Kinesiology was well-represented at the 2013 Texas ACSM annual meeting in Austin. Fifteen exercise science students and 5 faculty attended the two-day meeting. Undergraduate students Elizabeth Haddock, Allison Insell, Dylan Riedesel, and Alexis Schmidt, along with graduate student Jordan Stack, presented posters at the poster competition. Three undergraduate students, Allison Insell, Alexis Schmidt, and Rhonda Zuniga, competed for the javelinas at the Texas ACSM Student Bowl, a jeopardy-style competition testing their knowledge in the exercise sciences. Their team placed 6th out of 30 teams representing schools throughout the state, and placed the highest of all schools in south Texas. Congratulations!

Dr. Killion discusses the prevalence of childhood obesity in the United States and offers suggestions for avoiding the consequences of the national epidemic. The Texas Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine announced that the Department of Health & Kinesiology at Texas A&M University-Kingsville was selected as a host site for the 2012 Texas ACSM Fall Lecture Tour. The Department of HKN will welcome Dr. Claude Bouchard, Ph.D., FACSM to campus on Thursday, October 4, 2012. The lecture is open to the public. For more information, click the image below.

The Department of Health & Kinesiology welcomes new faculty member, Dr. Daniel Burt starting Summer II, 2012.
Dr. Burt joins the HKN faculty after recently completing his doctorate at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville. Dr. Burt also holds degrees from Henderson State University and Ouachita Baptist University (AR). He will be teaching in the areas of kinesiology pedagogy, adapted physical education, and sport business.

Judy Bloomquist, Faculty in HKN, was named the 2011 Outstanding College/University Physical Educator by the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (TAHPERD). She was recognized at their annual convention in Dallas, Tx.

Marcos Ramirez (Senior, Ex Sci/PrePT) was one of 16 (out of 32) undergraduates to receive the TCUR (TAMUK Council for Undergraduate Research) research grant. His project (The Effects of Commercially Available Holographic Bands on Strength, Balance, and Flexibility), which is his project for the Exercise Science Undergraduate Research Award he received from HKN, was funded for $1500. Congratulations.

The HKN Club hosted the South Texas Challenge, featuring four South Texas Universities (TAMUK, TAMUCC, UT-Brownsville, and UT-Pan Am). The teams competed against one another in four events: waterpolo, bowling, 3-team badminton, and an obstacle course. In the end, TAMUK's HKN club bested the others, winning the championship. TAMUCC took home the spirit award, and UT-Pan Am won the faculty advisors' award.

The Department of Health & Kinesiology will be welcoming new faculty members starting Fall, 2011.
Dr. David Cutton comes to A&M-Kingsville from his most recent academic appointment at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago, IL. Dr. Cutton holds degrees from the University of Florida and Louisiana State University and will be teaching in the areas of motor learning and general kinesiology.
Dr. Sara Mahoney joins the HKN faculty after recently completing her doctorate at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Mahoney also holds a degree from Hope College (MI) and will be teaching in the area of exercise physiology.
Dr. Lorraine Killion was most recently a faculty member at Lamar University in Beaumont, TX. She will be teaching in kinesiology pedagogy and will coordinate the EC-12 PE Program. Dr. Killion holds degrees from Stephen F. Austin State University, University of Houston-Clear Lake, Prairie View A&M University, and the University of Houston.

Senior Exercise Science/Pre-Physical Therapy major Ricky Balderas (Bishop, TX) has been named the 2011 Undergraduate Scholar by the Texas Regional Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine (TACSM). Balderas will receive this award at the 2011 TACSM Annual Meeting in Austin on February 25, 2011. Read more.
This is the second year in a row that an undergraduate from Texas A&M-Kingsville has received this prestigious award which recognizes a single outstanding undergraduate in the exercise sciences from one of the universities in Texas each year . Dyana Bullinger, HKN alumna and the 2010 TACSM Undergraduate Scholar, is currently pursuing her Master’s degree at Texas Woman’s University. Balderas, who will graduate with honors in May, has been granted unconditional early admission to the highly regarded Doctor of Physical Therapy program at UTMB-Galveston, and will begin that program in Fall, 2011.
