HOUSTON (April 17, 2013) – Texas A&M–Kingsville (TAMUK) 1968 graduate Leonard A. Bedell has been busy picking up business and business awards as president and CEO of Mobil Steel International, Inc. Mobil Steel won the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Greater Houston Chapter Business Excellence Awards in the fourth quarter of 2012 and in late January, 2013, was named ABC Houston member company of the year. Mobil Steel fabricates steel for industrial construction projects in petrochemical, manufacturing and utilities industries, as well as commercial construction. These industries have seen a resurgence during 2012-2013 leading to U.S. economic recovery.

In addition to being the president and CEO of Mobil Steel, Bedell is a board member and investor-owner in Mobil Steel. Bedell’s activities are not just with his own company. Bedell currently serves on the Texas A&M-Kingsville  College of Business Administration Advisory Board and as Treasurer of the TAMUK Foundation Board. Bedell served more than a decade as a director on the Texas A&I Alumni board, including as National President in 1988-89.

Additionally, Bedell, a Certified Public Accountant, serves as Treasurer of the ABC Houston Chapter, serves on the executive committee and as a board member of the chapter, as well as an elected trustee to the ABC Houston Political Action Committee. Throughout his career, Bedell has a long list of service to his community. Most notably, he is a lifetime director of Boys & Girls Country in Houston and has served on the boards of Chapelwood United Methodist Church and Good Neighbor Healthcare Center.

In the fourth quarter of 2012, the ABC Houston 2012 Best of Houston Business Excellence Award recognized Mobil Steel for outstanding business practices. Mobil Steel competed with 22 other commercial and industrial construction industry companies for the top award recognizing excellence for business management, stewardship and general business practices.

“It is an honor and it is humbling to receive recognition from our industry peers,” Bedell said.  “The award is validation of Mobil Steel’s core values – as a small business we are customer-focused with highly motivated, skilled employees who understand that they are partners with our customers in delivering high-quality, on-time work that meets the customers’ highest expectations and standards, time-after-time.”

Mobil Steel also won the Associated Builders and Contractors Greater Houston chapter Member of the Year award just a few months after earning the Business Excellence Award. The Member of the Year award recognizes members for outstanding contributions and extraordinary commitment in support of the association’s efforts to protect free market enterprise and business freedoms for commercial and industrial contractors. ABC Houston president Russell Hamley commended Mobil Steel for actively participating in the ABC chapter “good government” program by attending legislative conferences, inviting elected officials as guests to ABC events, and engaging officials on ideas and positions regarding construction industry policy and free enterprise principles.

Mobil Steel helps industry improve and protect free market principles

Bedell, who accepted the member company of the year award on behalf of Mobil Steel, said the company of the year award validates Mobil Steel’s commitment to advance the construction industry. “It is an honor for Mobil Steel to work along side the best contractors in the industry,” Bedell said. “As one of only a handful of American Institute of Steel Construction  (AISC) certified steel fabricators in the Houston area, we are pleased to be able to assist ABC Houston in improving the construction industry through better training and improved work processes that help contractors safely deliver quality work, and to share our industry’s commitment to free market principles.” As a Small Business Administration certified company, Mobil Steel and Bedell are champions of small businesses which are driving the U.S. economic recovery with a significant percentage of U.S. new hires. Small businesses are partnering with larger companies and trade associations to provide more training and create a larger pool of qualified employees for the construction industry.

Bedell, who has a distinguished list of business and personal accomplishments, said he is particularly proud that Mobil Steel provided steel fabrication for the recently completed U.S. Border Patrol headquarters in Kingsville. Bedell, who grew up in Corpus Christi and still regularly visits his mother in the port city, attended nearby Texas A&I University. After earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a major in accounting from Texas A&I University, Bedell was recruited and joined the Houston Office of the international firm of Arthur Andersen, LLP.  His career has spanned the fields of public accounting, management consulting and finance; and also included senior management positions in public and private firms specializing in food distribution, financial services, transportation, manufacturing, construction of commercial and residential projects, technology manufacturing, and medical waste management. Bedell currently leads Mobil Steel, a 44 year-old industrial and commercial steel fabrication business. He also has served on the Board of Directors of American Medical Technologies, Tidel Technologies, MedCon, and 3CI Complete Compliance Corporation where Bedell served on the Audit and Compensation Committees. Bedell actively maintains his Certified Public Accountant certification.
