The Academic Minor in Social Work
Beginning in the fall 2013 semester, an academic minor will be offered in social work. The minor in social work is designed to expose students from majors other than social work to various aspects of the social work profession including substantive areas of practice; additionally, students gain an understanding of the ecological paradigm, person-in-environment perspective, and a social, psychosocial, or biopsychosocial approach to individuals, couples, families, groups, organizations, communities, and society at large. In Texas and other states, applicants for social work licensure are required to have a CSWE accredited B.S.W. or M.S.W. degree; an academic minor in social work is insufficient for licensure in social work. However, a minor in social work may provide exposure for students to make better judgments about pursuing graduate school in social work or a related academic area of study, and may be useful to students who are majoring in related areas of academic study (e.g., psychology, sociology, criminology, and so forth).
Students who desire an academic minor in social work are required to complete 18 semester credit hours in social work including:
SCWK 2331 The Social Work Profession I
SCWK 3325 Human Behavior in the Social Environment I
SCWK 3329 Social Welfare: Policy and Advocacy I
SCWK 3335 Human Behavior in the Social Environment II
And six hours from the following:
SCWK 4306 Selected Topics in Social Work
SCWK 4311 Principles of Youth and Family Social Work
SCWK 4313 Principles of Mental Health Social Work
SCWK 4315 Principles of Health Social Work
SCWK 4317 Principles of Forensic Social Work
SCWK 4319 Principles of Geriatric Social Work
