Research interests:

Dr. Byrd uses physiological measures such as electroencephalogram (EEG, brain waves) and electrocardiogram (ECG, heart rate) to study higher-level cognitive processes often referred to as executive functions or frontal lobe functions.  She studies group differences in these higher-level cognitive processes such as the advantages seen in bilingual individuals in selective attention and inhibition and the advantages seen in visual-spatial working memory seen in individuals that know sign language. She is also interested higher-level thinking during everyday tasks such as online shopping. She is interested in future work investigating the development of these higher-level cognitive processes, since the frontal lobes that control them are among the last neural regions to develop. In the field of education, She is interested in studying techniques for better teaching scientific concepts in an online learning environment.
