The basic mission of the Department of history is to examine human institutions, to stimulate curiosity, to broaden horizons, to question myths, and to offer alternative ways of viewing and interpreting both the past and present. Teachers of history destroy complacency by challenging narrow provincialisms of time and place, chronicling and interpreting the good and bad of the past in order to promote present and future progress. The Department of History provides instruction in a wide variety of courses that enable students wishing to pursue history as a vocation to achieve a deeper, broader, more coherent understanding of history both as a general discipline and as a means of comprehending specific times, places, peoples, and institutions. In doing so, students gain a more meaningful perspective of the role of history in their lives and in lives of other cultures. The Department of History teaches skills applicable to careers in education, law, business, and government. The department’s courses provide students with the tools to conduct research, analyze evidence, organize arguments, synthesize information, document their positions, and effectively communicate their findings. All of these skills are in demand in whatever profession students may choose to pursue. The provision of knowledge of the discipline, comprehension and interpretation of the past, and achievement of skills is especially important to students planning to teach history in the public schools. The study of history prepares public school teachers to instruct their students at the primary and secondary levels in factual knowledge and the skills to successfully accomplish life tasks.
