Bismuth was confused with tin and lead in early times. The confusion was clear up when
Claude Geoffrey the Younger showed it was distinct from lead in 1753. Bismuth in the U.S. is obtained as a by-product in refining lead, copper, tin, silver,
and gold ores. Bismuth oxychloride is widely used in cosmetics.
